Recipe ingredients:

  • Salt: As per taste
  • Oil: 2 tbsp
  • Ghee/Clarified butter: 1 tbsp
  • Turmeric: 1 tsp
  • Ginger Paste: 1 tsp
  • Chopped Onion: 1/2 Cup
  • Water: 2 Cups
  • Chana Dal: 1/3 Cup
  • Coriander Leaves: For Garnishing
  • Cumin Seeds (Jeera): 1 tsp
  • Bay Leaf: 1 Nos
  • Red Chilly Powder: 1 tsp
  • Tomato: 1/2 Cup (Chopped)
  • Garlic Cloves: 1tsp Chopped
  • Garam Masala: 1/2 tsp
  • Coriander Powder: 1 tsp
  • Dried Red Chilli Whole: 1 Nos
  • Toor Dal: 1/2 Cup
  • Asafoetida: 1 tsp
  • Kasuri methi dry: 1 tsp

Step by Step Recipe

How to make Dal Fry :

  1. Pressure cook Toor dal and Chana dal with Salt, Turmeric and Water for 4-5 whistles.

  2. In a pan (Kadhai) add 2 tbsp of cooking oil and 1 tbsp of Ghee.

  3. Add Cumin seeds, Bay leaf, Whole red chilli and Asafoetida (hing) to it.

  4. Add chopped garlic and ginger paste to it and saute.

  5. Add chopped Onion and Salt. Saute till golden brown.

  6. Add Chopped tomatoes to it and saute again till oil separates.

  7. Add Garam Masala, Coriander Powder, Red Chilli Powder and mix well.

  8. Add boiled dal, and 2 Cups of water to it, Stir well.

  9. Mix well, Cover the lid and simmer it for 10 mins.

  10. Crush Kasuri methi in between hands and add to it.

  11. Garnish with Chopped coriander and serve with Rice or Plain Parantha.

Tip: Add a pinch of Asafoetida (hing) for extra flavour, along with Kasuri Methi.
